What is Dry Ice Blasting?

  • Dry ice blasting is a highly effective and eco-friendly cleaning method increasingly popular in the detailing world. It uses compressed air to accelerate dry ice pellets (solid CO2) at supersonic speeds to clean surfaces without causing damage

How does it work?

Dry ice blasting is non-abrasive, meaning it cleans surfaces without damaging them. This is ideal for sensitive automotive parts like engine bays, undercarriages, and interior components.

  Three-Step Process:
     1)  Kinetic Energy: The dry ice pellets hit the surface at high speed, loosening dirt and contaminants.
     2)  Thermal Shock: The cold temperature of the dry ice (-79°C) causes contaminants to shrink and crack.
     3)  Sublimation: The dry ice turns directly into gas upon impact, expanding underneath dirt and lifting it away                                              from the surface.

Key Applications in Detailing:

  • Engine Bay Cleaning: Dry ice blasting excels in removing grease, grime, and oil without the need for water or harsh chemicals, keeping sensitive components safe.

  • Undercarriage Cleaning: It’s highly effective at cleaning the underside of a vehicle, removing road salt, rust, and debris without damaging protective coatings or sensitive parts.

  • Interior Detailing: In specialized cases, dry ice can be used on interior surfaces like carpets or upholstery to remove stains or mold, though this requires careful handling.

  • Paint and Bodywork: It can clean painted surfaces without damaging them, making it great for restoring classic cars or prepping a surface for a new paint job without chemical strippers.

Advantages in Detailing:

  • Non-Toxic and Eco-Friendly: Since it uses dry ice (CO2), there are no harmful chemicals involved, making it safe for both the operator and the environment.

  • No Residue: Unlike traditional methods that use solvents or water, dry ice sublimates, leaving no secondary waste or moisture, which is crucial for avoiding rust or corrosion.

  •  Saves Time: The process is fast, reducing the time needed for deep cleaning, especially in hard-to-reach areas like the engine or suspension components.
